How Long Is the NAPLAN Test? Duration by Subject
4 min read
NAPLAN is not one long exam — it is four separate tests, each lasting roughly 40 to 65 minutes depending on the subject and year level, sat across several days during the test window.
The four tests
- Writing — around 40–45 minutes for one piece.
- Reading — roughly 45–65 minutes.
- Conventions of Language — about 45 minutes.
- Numeracy — roughly 45–65 minutes (split into calculator and non-calculator parts in Years 7 and 9).
Exact times vary by year level; the official NAP website (nap.edu.au) lists the current durations.
Why pacing beats speed
The tests are designed to be completed in the time given, so the goal is steady pacing — not rushing. A few full, timed practice papers teach your child to manage the clock and avoid getting stuck. Our practice-test guide explains how.
