Is NAPLAN Online? What the Digital Test Looks Like

4 min read

Yes — NAPLAN is now delivered online, sat on a computer or tablet at school. The one exception is Year 3 writing, which is still completed on paper.

What "tailored" testing means

The online tests are adaptive: the difficulty of the questions a student sees adjusts based on their answers. This lets the test measure each student's level more precisely, so two children may see different questions.

Preparing for the digital format

  • Practise on screen so reading and answering on a device feels normal.
  • Get used to on-screen tools like flagging and navigating between questions.
  • Type regularly — for the online writing tests, comfortable typing helps.

Because Number & Words is an online platform, practising with it naturally builds screen familiarity. Adaptive practice also mirrors the tailored format — see our practice-test guide.
