Can You Opt Out of NAPLAN? What Parents Should Know

4 min read

NAPLAN is a routine part of the school year, but it is not strictly compulsory for every student. Parents can, in defined circumstances, withdrawtheir child, and schools can grant exemptions in some cases.

Withdrawals and exemptions

  • Withdrawal — typically on grounds such as religious beliefs or philosophical objections, arranged in writing with the school.
  • Exemption — may apply to some students with significant disability or who are new to learning English.

Processes are managed by your school and state or territory authority, so speak to the school if you are considering it.

Should you opt out?

For most families, sitting NAPLAN provides useful information with little downside — especially when approached calmly. If anxiety is the concern, gentle preparation often helps more than withdrawal; see our guide on NAPLAN test anxiety.
