Year 3 NAPLAN: What’s Tested and How to Help Your Child
5 min read
Year 3 is your child's first NAPLAN, so it is as much about familiarity and confidence as it is about content. The test checks the literacy and numeracy skills built across the early years of primary school.
What Year 3 NAPLAN covers
- Reading — short texts with comprehension questions.
- Writing — a single narrative or persuasive task, completed on paper at Year 3.
- Conventions of Language — spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Numeracy — number, simple measurement, shape and basic data. No calculator at Year 3.
How to help without pressure
Keep it light. Read together every day, play with numbers in everyday life (cooking, shopping, telling the time), and let your child try a few practice questions so the format feels normal. Short, regular sessions beat long ones.
