Year 5 NAPLAN: What’s Tested and How to Prepare
5 min read
By Year 5, NAPLAN questions involve more reasoning and multi-step thinking than in Year 3. The four areas are the same, but the texts are longer and the numeracy is more demanding.
What Year 5 NAPLAN covers
- Reading — longer literary and factual texts, with inference and author-purpose questions.
- Writing — a narrative or persuasive response (online from Year 5).
- Conventions of Language — more complex spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Numeracy — fractions and decimals, area and perimeter, data and basic geometry. No calculator at Year 5.
A simple Year 5 plan
Pick the two weakest strands and rotate them across short weekly sessions, add one timed section a week to build pacing, and always review mistakes together.
