Year 7 NAPLAN: What’s Tested and How to Prepare

5 min read

Year 7 is the first NAPLAN of secondary school, and the numeracy test now includes a calculator section as well as a non-calculator section. Reading texts are longer and more analytical.

What Year 7 NAPLAN covers

  • Reading — extended texts across genres, with deeper inference and evaluation.
  • Writing — a narrative or persuasive task with more developed structure expected.
  • Conventions of Language — advanced spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Numeracy — two parts: non-calculator (mental and written methods) and calculator (multi-step problems).

Preparing for both numeracy parts

Build mental-maths fluency for the non-calculator section, and practise using a calculator efficiently for the multi-step questions — knowing when to reach for it is a skill in itself.

See Year 7 NAPLAN practice and NAPLAN numeracy strategies.
